Stitch an origami box

Cut a 30cm square to make a large box (20cm for the small size and 25cm for the medium version) from both patterned and plain fabric. With right sides together, pin and stitch around the edges using a 5mm seam allowance, leaving a gap in one side for turning. Clip the corners and turn the fabric out through the gap. Press, fold in the raw edge of the gap and topstitch the seams.

Download the template pack above to find the origami box folding diagram. Fold the fabric square in half in both directions, lightly pressing two crease lines. On the outside of the basket, mark the halfway distance between the centre and end of the creases. Fold the corners of the square in turn diagonally from mark to mark. Pin and topstitch 1mm from the fold to create a permanent crease.

Pinch one side of the square on the original pressed crease and pin a line from the corner of the base up to the edge. Repeat for the other sides to form a basket shape. Topstitch the pinned lines and flatten the pockets created at the corners of the container.

Fold down the corners of the square to make flaps between the pockets. Sew a button to the points, passing through all layers to keep the flaps in place.
